Updated 7 June 2026: Prices, subsidy rates, and regulatory references reviewed for current Kerala requirements.

Net metering is one of the most powerful benefits of going solar in Kerala — and one of the least understood. Once it is set up, KSEB credits your account for every unit of solar power you export to the grid.

What Is Net Metering?

Net metering allows you to send unused solar electricity back to the KSEB grid during the day and draw electricity back at night. Your electricity meter tracks the difference. At the end of the billing cycle, you only pay for the net units consumed — which for most solar homes is dramatically lower, sometimes even zero.

The 2026 Net Metering Rules You Need to Know

Under KSERC's Renewable Energy Regulations, 2025 (billing from January 2026), domestic net metering is available for systems up to 20 kW. Systems up to 10 kW are exempt from grid support charges; above 10 kW, grid support charges apply on banked energy during non-solar hours. Systems above 5 kW may need battery storage for certain approvals after April 2027. Installations with prior feasibility can be grandfathered under earlier terms.

The 3 kW sweet spot

For most Kerala homes, a 3 kW system hits maximum subsidy eligibility, meets net metering requirements, and delivers the fastest payback. It is the right size for the majority of households.

Step-by-Step Application Process

  • Step 1 — Apply through PM Surya Ghar portal: Register on pmsuryaghar.gov.in using your KSEB consumer number and Aadhaar-linked mobile. Submit your rooftop solar application and wait for Technical Feasibility (TFR) approval from KSEB.
  • Step 2 — Choose an empanelled vendor: Only MNRE-empanelled vendors can process the subsidy and net metering paperwork. Rayenna Energy handles all of this on your behalf.
  • Step 3 — Installation: Once TFR is approved, your system is installed. The physical installation takes 1–2 days.
  • Step 4 — Net meter installation: Your installer applies to KSEB for net meter installation. KSEB replaces your existing meter with a bidirectional net meter. This typically takes 2–4 weeks.
  • Step 5 — System goes live: Once the net meter is installed and inspected, your system is commissioned. From this point, you begin earning credits for every unit you export.

Documents Required

You will need your KSEB consumer number, Aadhaar card, latest electricity bill, proof of property ownership, and bank account details. Your installer manages the submission.

How Long Does the Whole Process Take?

From the day you sign with your installer to the day your system is live and exporting power, expect 4–8 weeks in Kerala. Most of this time is KSEB queue time, not installation time. When you work with Rayenna, we track your application status at every stage and keep you informed. No surprises, no chasing paperwork.
