Going solar is a 25-year commitment. The company you choose matters enormously — and the contract you sign matters even more. Here are the questions every Kerala homeowner should ask before putting pen to paper.

1. Are You MNRE-Empanelled?

This is non-negotiable. Only vendors listed on the MNRE empanelled list can process the PM Surya Ghar subsidy. Ask for their registration number and verify it on pmsuryaghar.gov.in. If they cannot provide this, walk away.

2. What Exactly Is Included in the Price?

A complete solar installation in Kerala should include panels, inverter, mounting structure, AC and DC cables, earthing, lightning protection, net meter application, and KSEB documentation. Ask for a line-by-line breakdown. Vague quotes that lump everything into one number often hide additional charges later.

3. What Are the Warranty Terms — for Each Component?

  • Panel performance warranty: Should be 25 years, guaranteeing at least 80–85% output.
  • Inverter warranty: Should be minimum 5 years, ideally 10.
  • Workmanship warranty: The installer's guarantee on their own labour — should be at least 5 years. Get all three in writing, in the contract itself — not just a verbal promise.

4. Who Handles the Subsidy Paperwork?

A reputable installer handles the entire PM Surya Ghar application process on your behalf — from portal registration to subsidy disbursement. If you are expected to navigate the government portal alone, that is a red flag.

5. What Is the Payment Structure?

⚠️
Red flag

Any installer asking for 100% payment upfront should be approached with caution. A standard payment structure is 30–50% advance, balance on commissioning. This protects you if anything goes wrong during the process.

6. Do You Have Local References I Can Call?

Ask for three to five customer contacts in your district — not testimonials on their website, but real people you can call. A confident, experienced installer will have no hesitation providing these.

7. Who Provides After-Sales Service?

Solar panels last 25 years. Your installer should still be reachable in year 10. Ask who handles maintenance, monitoring, and repairs — and whether they have a local service team or rely on a distant headquarters.

8. Will the System Have Remote Monitoring?

Most modern systems come with app-based monitoring that shows real-time generation data. Confirm whether monitoring is included, and who you contact if something looks wrong.
