Updated 24 July 2026: Prices, subsidy rates, and regulatory references reviewed for current Kerala requirements.

Panel brand and inverter matter — but your roof decides how the system is fixed, how long waterproofing lasts through monsoon, and how much usable area you really have. A site survey that skips roof type is not a site survey.

Three Roofs You See Everywhere in Kerala

Roof typeTypical mountWatch-outs
Clay / concrete tileRail on hooks / tile anchorsFragile tiles, ridge leaks, steep pitch
RCC flat terraceBallast or penetrative legsParapet shade, water tanks, walkways
Metal / GI sheetClamp to purlins / raised frameThin sheets, rust, heat under panels

Tiled Roofs

Common on older and mid-size homes. Installers use specialised hooks that sit under tiles and fix to rafters — done right, tiles go back without chronic leaks. Done wrong, the first heavy rain finds every gap.

  • Ask how many tiles will be lifted and how flashings / sealants are specified.
  • Steep pitches need fall protection and careful cable runs.
  • Broken or porous tiles should be replaced before panels go up — not after the first complaint.

RCC Flat Terraces

Ideal for raised structures (elevated frames) that leave walk space and keep panels cooler with airflow. Ballasted systems avoid roof punctures where structure allows; penetrative mounts need proper waterproofing at every bolt.

Shade Is the Silent Killer

Water tanks, dish antennas, parapet walls, and neighbouring coconut palms can wipe out a whole string’s output. A good design maps shade across the day — especially for monsoon-low sun angles. See also our monsoon guide.

Metal Sheet Roofs

Fast to mount when purlins are sound, but thin sheets can oil-can or rust. Prefer clamps into structure, not self-tappers into sheet alone. Raised frames (common in Kerala) lift panels above heat and allow inspection underneath — exactly what you see in many Rayenna installation photos.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

  • “Where do loads transfer?” — into rafters / columns, not just the skin of the roof.
  • “What is the waterproofing method?” — product name and warranty, not “we will seal it.”
  • “How much area after setbacks and shade?” — usable kW, not theoretical terrace area.
  • “Who repairs a leak in year three?” — get it in the contract; our contract checklist helps.

Bottom Line

Every Kerala roof can host solar — but the mount, waterproofing, and shade plan must match your roof. Insist on a documented site survey with photos of structure and shade before you compare quotes on panel wattage alone.
